My Background

For 50 years, Anna has trained young students with professional theater goals. Some are now performing leading roles on Broadway, in television and film. Other students teach, direct and are playwrights for professional theaters and universities across the globe. In the 1970’s Anna taught acting and children’s theater at the University of Maryland and wrote a theater textbook, “Drama Integrates Basic Skills.” She earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Theater Arts and an M.Ed in Drama Therapy. Her original play and film, Terezin: Children of the Holocaust, has toured in the United States and abroad for the past 50 years. Many of the actors in Terezin are also Anna’s theater students.

In 1979 Anna founded the Newburyport Children's Theatre, now known as Theatre in the Open. Currently, Anna runs Anna Smulowitz Productions which presents dramas and musicals in the Greater Newburyport area and productions of Terezin both locally and all over the world. Anna Smulowitz Productions annually collaborates with over 100 local actors, directors, designers, writers, choreographers, musicians and stage technicians. The long term goal of the organization is to provide contemporary and classical theater experiences for children and adolescents. Anna continues to teach drama and scene study classes and presents musical and dramatic productions. Students of all ages are welcome to participate in classes and theatrical productions.
